Finding 'heirlooms' in Brooklyn | New York

This time I found a very feminine heirloom piece that has been worn many times in both South Africa and the USA since the early 1950s.

Ik woon sinds 4 weken in Crown Heights. Een Caribische West-Indies buurt in Brooklyn, New York.

I was lucky to stay in the appartment of Randi Mates for a week and was intrigued by all the different jewelry pieces lying and hanging around in the house. Randi is the designer of Brooklyn based jewelry brand Aesa so i guess i shouldn’t have been surprised… I could’t stop looking at the jewelry and decided to take some pictures of it.

A couple of months ago i bought a really cute earring from a dutch creative girl called Ineke Krul. The earring was made from a left ‘white pump’ what had once belonged to a barbie doll. I love it. It’s subtle and funny.

The barbie pump brought back childhood memories. I was a barbie girl myself. Not in the sense that i wanted to look like one, but i loved to play with them. And so did my sister Suzy.

I bought this beautiful mint leather pencil skirt at a gigantic salvation army store in Detroit. It was an over knee skirt and i really loved it that way. I say ‘was’, because as you probably know we Dutch ladies bike around most of the time. And so ja, you feel it coming… One day it happened….

So…this actually is my first official ‘fashion outfit’ blog. First i want to just say to those millions of girls and women out there doing fashion blogs: how in the world do you guys do this every single day?!  R E S P E C T ! It’s sooooo much work! And that’s why i want to start with congratulating Saskimo on getting this one done. I did it!
